PointShot Wireless to Provide Wireless Internet for Quebec City to Windsor VIA Rail Fleet
Ottawa, Canada, 22 Novembre 2005 -
PointShot Wireless, the first company to deliver wireless Internet access on board trains in North America, today announced the first major deployment of its wireless Internet technology on the continent. Leading communications technology provider Parsons will use PointShot's RailPoint family of products to provide wireless service on VIA Rail's fleet in the Quebec City to Windsor corridor.
Passengers on VIA Rail's fleet will have access to the internet using a laptop computer with 802.11 wireless capability or any other similarly equipped mobile device, such as a personal digital assistant. No special hardware or configuration is required to access the service passengers simply turn on their device and open their Internet browser. Once connected, passengers have access to e-mail, the Internet, their corporate intranet and instant messaging. The service is seamless and always on.
PointShot Wireless President & CEO Shawn Griffin said the deployment is a major step forward for the company. "This industry first provides validation of our solution for large-scale commercial broadband wireless access on passenger trains. VIA's customers have been telling them that they want to see this service on all of its Quebec City to Windsor corridor trains. We feel that Parsons selection of PointShot will promote and encourage adoption by many other major rail operators
in both North America and Europe."
Parsons is a leader in providing technical and management solutions to enterprises and governments worldwide, specializing in several areas including information systems, communications and advanced technology. "Parsons believes in the importance of Internet access to business travelers wherever they are "said Keith Dunbar, Vice President, Parsons Consumer Services. "We are very pleased to be the first service provider in North America to provide business rail travelers with universal fleet-wide wireless Internet access. This represents a unique opportunity to extend our network and provide new services to the mobile business customer. We are very happy to be working with PointShot Wireless and their innovative solution."
"This value added service aimed primarily at business travelers and students gives VIA Rail a considerable competitive edge over other methods of transportation, especially for travelers who rely on their laptops or Personal Digital Assistants to conduct their daily business." said Steve Del Bosco, Vice-President, Marketing at Via Rail Canada.
This is the first of several significant announcements expected from PointShot in the coming year. As the company's unique technology transitions from trials to commercial deployment, PointShot will deploy its solution with additional customers in North America and is poised for launch in several countries in Europe as well.
